The Hobbian Way of Life
Entry #1:
My name is Thomas Hobbes and I believe humans obey the laws of individual survival; that every human is ultimately only looking out for themselves. This is what I believe human nature is; everyone only has one thing on their mind- to protect oneself. Even at the expense of other people. I believe that the only natural right is the right to protect oneself using any means necessary including violence. I think that because all people only think of themselves they will live in a state of scarcity because no one will be able to suppress their greed and allow there to be enough for everyone. To solve this problem there the government would be a dictatorship, a third party observer that would have complete power over everyone. The ideal third party dictator would not abuse their power, but make sure everyone had enough. Because of this form of government there would no longer be a scarcity of goods and the dictator would allow everyone to live peacefully. Even though people are only looking out for themselves they would not perish because of this form of structured government.
Example 1: In the movie Mean Girls, Regina George turns in a book called the Burn Book, which has mean lies written about all the girls in their grade. Regina blames the book on her 3 ex best friends all because one of the, Cady, gave her these bars that make her gain weight when Cady told her that they would make her lose weight. This is very Hobbian because he believes that everyone should do whatever they can to survive and that everyone only looks out for themselves. This book started literally started a girl war and it was every girl for themselves.
Example 3: The movie Anastasia is about a girl who is separated from her grandmother when her family is killed. The grandmother has said that she will give a lot of money for the return of Anastasia. So these two men decide to hold auditions for an Anastasia and bring the grandmother a fake so that they will get the money. This is a very greedy thing to do because these men giving the grandmother a fake granddaughter so they can have the money. Meanwhile, probably hurting the grandmother when she finds out this really isn't her granddaughter.
Example 3: n the TV show Glee, one of the girls in Glee club is very selfish and has to be the best and win at everything. So when she hears that the club needs more people and that there are auditions she gets nervous that she will be out shined. So the girl hears an exchange student singing in the bathroom and hears that she is really good. Pretending to be nice she gives the exchange student an address that is fake so the she won't make it to the auditions and she will be able to stay on top.

I think that the ending of the story Lord of the Flies by William Golding is an accurate ending because I think that the way things played out was realistic. Jack was on his way to kill Ralph, he was searching for him. This is realistic because Jack would do anything he could to get what he wanted, and what he wanted was to be the leader with no interferences, Ralph was an interference. So I think Jack was right to try to kill Ralph, he was just doing what his human nature told him to do; don’t look out for anyone but yourself and do everything you can to get what you want. When the boys were rescued, I believe that this is like the third party stepping in when things started to get out of hand. Jack was doing the right thing when it came to human nature with no rules or structure. But when the adults came to rescue the boys, that is like a government taking over and it was right for Jack to step down and let the adults take over. But when the boys got back to England they boys would be forced to do what the adults (dictator) said. But because they have had a taste of what it is like to have no rules, it is like the example gave with the coconuts and the two people on the island. If they had had no on to tell them who gets how many coconuts one of them would have eventually one of the people would have killed the other for the coconuts and if there had been others on the island that one who stole first would not be able to stop; they would want more power. Jack would eventually want more than the just being told what to do. This would not end in a good way.
When given the choice to do the right thing or the wrong thing, it is in human nature for people to do the wrong thing when there are no consequences. This is because humans are ultimately only looking out for themselves; this is portrayed in the book Lord of the Flies when Jack is trying to kill Ralph so he will be the one and only leader.
I think that the Sudanese Boys experiences is a once in a lifetime kind of thing. This will never happen again, I’m surprised that it even happened at all. I think that the boys would have ended up killing each other and not trying to save anyone but themselves. I think that the boys could have chosen a path like the boys in the Lord of the Flies did. They could have elected a leader that would have been their third party. But it would end the same way as Lord of the Flies. The boys would have gotten jealous of the power and tried to overthrow the leader. But the Sudanese boys didn’t do this. I think this is very out of character and goes against human nature. The only thing that explains why the boys didn’t start killing each other would be that they wanted to be famous for what they did, that underneath it all, they are still in it for themselves. That is the only reason why people do good things; to get the recognition or for people to think they are nice. Ultimately in the end they are still in it for themselves.

“Philosophies of leadership are determined by beliefs about human nature." This means that the belief of how you lead is dictated by you think the followers will respond to your lead. How one chooses to lead a group is influenced by the people in that group. An example would be that a teacher would have a different style of teaching for a group of students who dislike school than a teacher would have when he was in charge students who want to learn and enjoy doing work. Because people are different, unique styles of leading need to be adapted to obtain maximum success. I agree with this because the base of human mature is greed and selfishness. So underneath is all, humans are all the same and need to be treated and lead the same. The best form of government and leadership for humans is a dictatorship or a third party. This person would be able to control the greed in people and prevents the things that may be done because of this greed and selfishness.
“The governed have a responsibility for their governance." The governed have a responsibility to respect and follow the governance, but the governance must also treat the people with respect. The people have a responsibility to each other and themselves to impeach a leader if they are not doing a god job and if that said leader is not treating the people with respect. Or not treating all people fairly. So as a response to this, the leader must treat the people equally and with respect if they want to keep their job. A good example of this is if two people are stranded on an island with only two coconuts. They would need to get a third party to take the coconuts and control who gets them. Or else the people would do anything to get all the coconuts for themselves. The two people would need to put their trust in that leader or else there would be no way to ensure that they would get their coconut. I do not agree with this at all because I believe the leader has complete power over the people and that they shouldn’t have a chance to impeach their leader. Because everyone is greedy, they will try to get the leader taken out. But this is only to help them and the impeachment would be purely out of a selfish nature. Every person would be trying to overthrow the leader if it was something they wanted or if it got in the way of something they wanted.
“Human nature does not determine our actions; it inclines us toward certain actions.” Human nature doesn’t completely control us or make our choices for us. It pushes us in one direction or the other. All people are not “bad” and all people are not “good”, but human nature pushes us in one direction. People still have choices, they are not completely controlled. But human nature is a large influence in what they choose and decide to do. An example of this is someone might steal something from a grocery store, but human nature pushes them in one direction or the other. Pushes them to either steal it or put it back on the shelf. I agree with this statement. That all people human nature pushes them to become selfish and greedy. People try to hide their human nature but in the end it shows itself in the choices people make. There is no hiding from it because it will ultimately show itself in the end. In the end, I believe people will make the decision to do the bad things.
Entry #4:
Ladies and gentleman it is time to sadly conclude this blog. I feel that this is the most appropriate time to end this blog because human nature will never change but I think that I have gotten my point across and maybe some of you may learn something about yourselves. Humans are greedy and selfish and that will never change. But if there is a chance of change at all, it would start with people knowing and understanding who they are and who everyone else is. Human nature is the reason scientists have invented robots, because obviously scientists have figured out that humans can’t work together so they need to make fake people to do it. I am not an expert on robots though. I think I have portrayed my thoughts thoroughly and have brought light to some situations and explained how they show human nature. That many people will do things so that people think they are being nice but really it is for them. Everyone is selfish, but the question is; how far will people go to get what they want, and when will it ever stop?
Sincerely,
Thomas Hobbes
